Production and Utilization of Meat from Entire Male Pigs Working Group

In the 80’s a European working group, composed by researchers expert on the subject known as boar taint, has started to work under the name of “Production and Utilization of Meat from Entire Male Pigs working group”. This EAAP working group of international experts work on key issues such as genetic, nutrition, meat quality, animal welfare and consumer research related to the boar taint problem associated with the utilization of entire male pigs.

The aim of the group is to create a network of investigation and organize meetings to facilitate the interchange of information and progress on different themes related to boar taint, as well to encourage the dissemination of this knowledge.

Since March 2011 Dr. Maria Angels Oliver, of IRTA (Barcelona), is the Chair of the Working Group, which at the moment can count on the contribution and participation of more than 80 scientists. She is also part of the core group of scientist composed by: Dr. Frank Tuyttens, Dr. Ulrike Weiler, Dr. Jim Squires and Dr. Michel Bonneau.

Some of the scientists of the group lately participated at the 62nd Annual Conference of the EAAP in Stavanger, Norway, where it held a session entitled: “Consumer studies in relation to stop Castration in pigs”. The EAAP working group (core group) will also take part in the coming International conference “Boars heading for 2018” (www.boars2018.com) in Amsterdam, Netherland, where it will hold a specialized scientific satellite program on the 2nd of December.
