The Health and Welfare Commission (until recently known as the ‘Management and Health Commission’) aims to support scientific debate on issues related to the health and wellbeing of all livestock species. Animal health and welfare are research themes supported by several underlying veterinary disciplines, such as epidemiology, virology and bacteriology, but also the scientific domains of ethology, preventative veterinary science and stress physiology. Because of its multi species nature, the Commission works together very often with other study commissions. Examples of such collaboration are EAAP sessions on Group housing of sows (with Pig Commission), Stress and Immune reactions (with Physiology Commission) and Breeding for better health and welfare (with Genetics Commission). The Commission does not shy away from addressing areas of livestock production which cause societal concern, such as the responsible use of antibiotics (in 2014) and the routine docking of pig tails (in 2015). It invites research colleagues, but also stakeholders from the industry and society at large to join these debates from a factual and scientific point of view.
